A Few Simple Changes Can Keep Acid Reflux at Bay

If you experience acid reflux, relieving your symptoms may be as easy as changing some habits. Here are several tips for deterring acid reflux from showing up.

Many folks get acid reflux symptoms during the night. However merely by cutting out your bedtime snack, you can get a number of relief. Don’t snack for a few hours leading up to bedtime. Evening snackers will have a particularly challenging time with this. But keep in mind that you will not have a restful night if you give in to temptation.

The foods you eat are equally important as when you eat them. For example, foods that are acidic such as coffee, alcohol, citrus juices and tomato products all raise the possibility of undergoing acid reflux. Excess production of stomach acids can be due to even apparently harmless food items. Spicy foods or those that are high in fat content are regular causes of acid reflux.

Restricting the amount of food you eat is another critical consideration in deterring acid reflux symptoms. This involves limiting your portion sizes at each meal. Food is sent back up the esophagus when your stomach is overly full. This really exacerbates the fiery sensation in your chest because it has soaked up some of the stomach acids.

If you are obese, try losing several pounds. A lot of individuals discover a decrease in their acid reflux symptoms once they do. They find that their stomachs do not experience as much pressure and have more space to digest the food they eat. So it isn’t as likely to be brought back up the esophagus.

Occasionally you might surrender to temptation and eat too much or choose the wrong foods. If this is the case, it is very important that you avoid lying down and instead stay sitting or standing in an erect position. This will help to retain the food in your stomach, far from your esophagus, and speed up the digestion process. Once you do lie down, make sure to keep your head elevated, either by propping up your mattress or using an acid reflux wedge pillow.

It’s not just those who are heavy who need to make some lifestyle changes to prevent acid reflux. Smokers are also at higher risk of experiencing this condition. If you smoke, the muscles in your esophagus do not work as efficiently. So they have a more difficult time keeping undigested food out of the esophagus and in the stomach where it belongs. Moreover, the stomach acid of smokers is more harmful because of the presence of chemicals. Every drag on a cigarette increases your risk of undergoing acid reflux.

Take note that serious acid reflux may not respond to simple lifestyle changes. There are those who will still have to go to see their doctor to get relief.
